If you’re not cool with using the GitHub Updater plugin to manage installation and updates of stuff not hosted on the WordPress.org repo, you can still use Bootplate.  You just have to install it the WordPress way.

Install Bootplate using the Administration Panel

There are tons of more detailed information on the WordPress documentation site, but here’s our take on how to install Bootplate through the administration panel.

  1. Download the latest, stable release of Bootplate from GitHub (choose the ZIP file option)
  2. Unzip the downloaded file, and rename the directory from bootplate-master to just bootplate
  3. Zip that new file and name it bootplate.zip
  4. Head over to Appearance >> Themes in the WordPress admin
  5. Click the Add New button next to “Themes”
  6. Click the Upload Theme button next to “Add Themes”
  7. Click Browse and select the bootplate.zip file you created and renamed

WordPress will upload, unzip and install the theme for you after a few seconds depending on your network connection.  Once that’s done, just click Activate on the theme to start using Bootplate.
